The Mark of a Well-Made Drawer

In this 5-day course you will enjoy the experience of crafting and fitting a classic drawer. It is designed for those with at least basic or intermediate experience. This course follows on well from the Introduction to Fine Woodworking course.

Published in 1938 in the Woodworker Magazine, the well-respected maker and prolific author Charles Hayworth wrote, “Perhaps there is nothing which so quickly reveals the quality of a piece of woodwork as the fitting of its drawer”.

The ins and outs of a good drawer

When it comes to woodworking nothing quite beats the feel of a beautifully made drawer sliding smoothly into place.

This course will guide you through the processes that will see you construct a well-made and well fitted drawer. It will cover carcase and drawer construction, selection and preparation of stock, the different approaches for laying out and cutting through and half blind dovetails, fitting a drawer and solutions to correcting mishaps. To do this you will use a range of hand and power tools, as well as woodworking machines.

This will not be a purist approach! We will also use jigs and aids and have fun making through dovetails using the bandsaw. A technique which I am sure many will find interesting and liberating.

Participants will be making a small sample drawer to enable them to explore the finer points
of drawer construction and fitting.

The course will also include:

  • selecting and preparing the stock

  • the sequence for truing the parts in preparation for laying out

  • hand cutting both through and lapped dovetails

  • the approach to gluing up the drawer

  • approaches to drawer slips and bottoms

  • the final fitting of the drawer to a simple carcase box (provided)

  • review of carcass construction

  • correcting faults

  • course notes covering content also included
