Lettering has been an important aspect of the carver’s art for a very long time. Most of what has survived from ancient times has been carved in stone. The Romans commemorated their military exploits on numerous monuments and in doing so developed a style which was particularly well suited to incised carving, with good visibility in sunlight. This style is the classic Roman alphabet which we know so well today. Ever since Roman times, this lettering style has remained the favourite for signs, nameplates and inscriptions in both public and private applications.
The basis of this course is the Roman lettering style. Students will learn the important features of layout and then complete a sign or nameplate of their choice.
Numerous other lettering styles, or fonts, have been designed over the years and some of these work well as carvings. In addition to the Roman lettering, this course will cover a less formal low relief style which is simpler to do and suits less formal situations. This style was used extensively by Fred Gurnsey, perhaps new Zealand’s most well known carver.
Along with the lettering techniques, students will have the opportunity to improve their drawing and sharpening skills, both essential for good carving.Course Dates
