This 6-day master class with David Haig is for those of intermediate to advanced skill level.
Inspired by an Art Deco piece this striking hanging shelf was designed by David back in 2014 and we ran as a one-off short course here in 2015. Happily this is now reintroduced into our 2024 programme short course programme.
This project is an exercise in cutting accurate joinery on curved sections principally using hand tool techniques. The project includes steam bending, forming a simple circle, and inserting it using a router set-up.
The front face of the central panel is treated as a purely decorative element with a selection of veneers and layout to choose from. By using tusk tenons with wedges to link the frames, it could also if needed. be made knockdown for ease of transport There is also a little metal work involved to create the brass plate which is set into the back of the shelf for hanging on the wall. .
So in a single piece there are multiple learning opportunities and at the end of it a very attractive and unique wall -mounted shelf unit for displaying your treasures.
