Steam Bending for Utilitarian Object Design

Join us for a hands-on, two-week workshop where you will delve into the art of steam bending to design and create functional objects.

This course will explore steam bending techniques to incorporate curved elements into everyday items. Yuri will also introduce her playful approach to bending, including a fascinating and friendly method to steam-bend wood without a steam box.

You will be guided through the entire process, from initial design brainstorming to the creation of final prototypes, such as trays, boxes, mirrors, and wall shelves.

We will cover essential steam bending techniques, engage in creative design sessions, and develop unique prototypes of practical and aesthetically pleasing objects.

What we will explore:

Basic steam bending technique and process:

  • Selection of wood,

  • Preparation of bending stock

  • Form making

  • Bending

  • Drying

Design development:

  •  Sketching

  • Model making

  • Experimenting with bending and refining design,

  • Prototyping

This workshop is a perfect opportunity for anyone who enjoys designing and is eager to expand their creative horizons in woodworking.
