This two–week course is designed for the intermediate to advanced maker and offers a wonderful opportunity to build one of David Haig’s iconic designs - the elegant, practical and very comfortable hoop stool. This project has been sporadically part of the short course and a set project within our full time programme since 2007. We are delighted to bring it back into the short course programme again in 2024.
The stool building involves several of the key wood-bending techniques, including steam bending as well as kerf bending and laminating.
Special jigs are used for the thicknesser and the table saw; the bandsaw and \jointer also get a thorough work-out. This course includes several critical operations using the router (both hand held and table mounted) expanding the students’ repertoire with this versatile machine.
Hand skills are further developed both in careful jointing and hand shaping. The hand plane and spoke shave are used for refining the final shape.
