Vessel Design with Kelly Parker

Beyond your Basic Box

Although I am primarily a furniture maker I love to make boxes as well. They are wonderful functional objects. However I found the term ’box’ to be a bit limiting. Once I removed my self–imposed functional requirement my boxes took on a whole new quality. I now consider them vessels, a term which, to me, implies more creative freedom with the form.

Join me as we explore the sculptural possibilities that vessels provide. We will complete a number of design explorations as we push our concept of “containment” to new levels. We will work in MDF, plywood, rigid foam or beech as we explore our ideas. The end goal of the class is to have several full-sized mockups, rather than a finished piece. We want to explore ideas, push boundaries and expand our design vocabulary. The lessons and insights from this class can be applied to your furniture designs as well.

Topics to be covered:

  • creativity exercises
  • defining functional requirements (or lack thereof!)
  • going from sketch to model
  • using inexpensive materials to quickly develop an idea
  • the vessel as a canvas for embellishment

N.B. Embellishment Techniques runs straight after this course with skills and techniques covered in both workshop complimenting each other. You can enroll for either course or both of them.
