This course builds systematically on skills developed in Beginning Cabinet
Making. Students will be given a choice of three set projects, enabling
them to practice, hone and expand on the skills already learnt. In each
of the projects, traditional dovetailing and drawer making will be given
special emphasis, thereby fostering the particular accuracy and skills
required for these to be successful. This will provide a new benchmark
for their approach to fine woodworking.
As well as dovetails, students will be introduced to mortise and tenon
joinery, dowel construction, half-laps and other joints appropriate to
their projects. More advanced methods of machining and procedures for
maintenance and set-up will be introduced. Students will learn the basics
of wood technology. This will include information on milling, drying and
storing of timber, timber selection and identification, and understanding
the issues and solutions to the problems of wood movement.
