The course is suitable for beginners or those with experience who wish to
extend their skills. Participants will undertake a series of set projects
designed to explore the possibilities of knife-cut marquetry making.
The course will culminate in the completion of a contemporary style
jewellery box or breakfast tray. Through these projects we hope that
participants will begin to look at marquetry in a contemporary way.
Areas covered will include:
The use of marquetry past and present
Appropriate selection of veneer to exploit decorative potential
Cutting techniques
Methods of assembly
Preparation of bases
Appropriate glues and techniques for pressing
Cleaning-up and finishing of panels.
Throughout the course the place of marquetry in contemporary woodworking
will be discussed and debated.
