An additional course to our programme aiming to meet the needs of students wishing to improve and expand their machining ability and skills with the router. A full day will be spent focused on setting up and safely using planers, thicknessers, bandsaws and circular saws. Four further days will then be devoted to covering all aspects of routers and router use. Practical projects will be used to illustrate these principles and students should expect to take home at least two completed pieces of work.
The course will emphasise the safe use of routers in both the hand-held and
table modes and is aimed especially at those new to the use of routers but who wish to use them to
widen the scope of their woodworking skills and future projects. Routers, cutters and commonly
used accessories will be discussed in detail. A few of the many commercially available jigs will be
discussed and shown.
Those already owning a router should, if possible, bring it to the course as well as the template
guide which is usually included with the machine. Those who do not own a router will be advised
what to look for when purchasing one. Routers will be available at the CFW for participants who
do not yet own one.
Time will be spent in making and using simple jigs often constructed for a one-off project. Others
can be used more permanently. In the time available it is hoped to complete a small project which
will also involve making a jig which is handy for long-term use.
