The major feature of this period of time is the opportunity for students to undertake their own self directed work or opt into any of these carefully structured and focussed courses running throughout the module:–
Advanced hand skills (1 week) – Enjoy the opportunity to further develop your skills as we build this small project completely by hand. We will tackle advanced technical skills for example, secret mitred and angled dovetails Tricky three way lap joints become old hat and coopering and curved panels become a doddle.
Treen (3 weeks) – development of small scale wooden batch production items – often called “bread and butter” products. This course will focus on the importance of market research and product development to facilitate profit and ultimately the presentation of these items for sale to a market via a blog and website.
Chest of drawers (3 weeks) – this fascinating piece of furniture allows students to take advantage of the draw making repetition required to gain pace and become fully capable in this process. Elegance and subtlety will be the by-words here. A great design opportunity.
At this point some students will still prefer some structure or direction to their learning, whilst others will be ready to fully embrace an open brief or commissioned piece. This exciting part of the programme is where high quality exhibition standard work will be produced.
Students who are not attending the full time course can access both the structured projects, or attend for a predetermined period of time to undertake an individual project, advanced in nature, under tutor supervision, whilst enjoying the energy and motivation present during this time. The final week of this programme will involve all students in being involved in a well established, high profile nationally recognised exhibition.
