VENEERING with DAVID UPFILL-BROWN

Master Class

This is a one-week opportunity to learn or reinforce most aspects of veneering for makers of furniture or artefacts in wood.

This class is open to beginners and/or anyone with a project in hand that requires veneer.

If you are a beginner we will mitre-edge and then veneer a square panel with a 12-way radial match.

If you have a reasonable project in hand we will tackle this piece meal and this can be discussed prior to class; you will likely have to supply your own veneers to fit your design.

Topics covered will be:

  • The history of veneering
  • Reasons for veneering
  • Commercial veneers and their manufacture
  • Man-made veneers – slicing and peeling
  • Other materials – metals, shell, laminates, etc.
  • Making your own veneer – sawing
  • Sourcing and selecting veneers – types and cuts
  • Matching and balancing veneers – decorative possibilities, book match, slip match, quartered, diamond quartered, radial starburst, marquetry (we will only touch on this) etc.
  • Core materials
  • Edging and lipping and relevant joinery
  • Adhesives
  • Joining veneers – edging, gluing and taping
  • Pressing veneers – vacuum and platen-press systems
  • Curved work – formers for panels and veneering curved furniture components
  • Tidying and sanding veneers
  • Finishing veneered work

Most of the practical topics above will be covered by example and exercise at the bench.
