Centre for Fine Woodworking - Woodworking Basics

New Zealand's premier furniture making, woodworking & design school

Woodworking Basics

This is our new "taster" course for the absolute beginner, offering a convenient and accessible opportunity to come and have a go at some woodworking. This course is offered in two different formats – either as a 4–day short course or a block of 9 x 3 hour nightclasses.

The course is an introduction to fine woodworking skills with an emphasis on the use of hand tools and simple, easy to use machines like the bandsaw and drill press. Students will be introduced to the joys of hand cut joinery using a variety of hand tools and techniques including use of measuring and marking equipment, the hand saw, chisels and the hand plane. You will learn how to cut and fit a joint by hand as well as how to set up and operate the bandsaw and drill press. Students will take home a project that incorporates all the skills learnt during the course.

Group bookings can be arranged – if you would like to come for a long weekend course with a group of friends please get in touch to make arrangements.
